FORMER WORLD 5000m RECORD HOLDER, DAVE MOORCROFT TOURS THE UK TO HELP INSPIRE A NEW ARMY OF VOLUNTEERS ONE YEAR ON FROM LONDON 2012
Join In, the home of the Olympic and Paralympic volunteers, is running a summer-long drive to encourage people to volunteer in their local communities.
Taking place over the anniversary period of the Games, (27 July – 9 September 2013) the Join In Summer 2013 is bringing the legacy to your doorstep with over 10,000 local events being put on in clubs and community groups across the UK. Olympians and Paralympians including Nicola Adams, Jason Kenny, Richard Whitehead and Mark Foster have already got involved and lent a hand at clubs local to them.
As sports clubs and community groups throw open their doors across the UK to attract new volunteers, supporters and members, British sporting hero Dave Moorcroft is on a tour of towns and cities across the UK to thank local volunteers for giving up their spare time to keep the Games Makers’ spirit alive and contribute to the sporting legacy of London 2012.
Over the course of the summer, Dave is travelling to all four corners of the UK, and trying his hand at sports ranging from netball to badminton, in a bid to encourage local people to help out at clubs and groups in any way they can, whether that’s making tea and sandwiches or filing the monthly accounts.
Having competed in three Olympic Games during his career, Dave knows just how important the role of volunteers is to ensure that Team GB continue to be a strong force in the years to come.
Dave Moorcroft, said:
“It may be nearly thirty years since I last competed at an Olympic Games, but the career path of an athlete in this country is still much the same. Getting a taste for sport at a small volunteer led, sports clubs is the starting point for most. It’s where they discover their love for a certain sport and passion for competition.
“While it’s great to see so many more people taking up sport since London 2012, many of these sports clubs and groups are already stretched and finding it hard to cater for the increase in demand. It’s for that reason that we need to inspire thousands more people to give up their time to volunteer in their local area and ensure that the legacy of those amazing Games last summer is alive and kicking for years to come.”
North Bradley Peace Memorial Trust (the charity established in 1944, who own and maintain the hall and recreation ground on Southwick Road, North Bradley) is holding our annual Back to School Sports Day on Saturday 31st August starting at 2.30pm. This year we would like to invite you to attend this special day when not only will Dave Moorcroft be attending to help inspire interest in sport generally but also at 3pm the site it to have its dedication ceremony for becoming a Queen Elizabeth 11 protected playing field. Entry is free to the event which will offer sports activities, including Active Trowbridge Sports Roadshow, art with Wiltshire Scrapstore, a variety of stalls, arena events, BBQ and more!
The Trust would like to invite anyone interested in volunteering for the Peace Memorial Trust as a committee member or friend or in joining an existing or starting a new sporting club on site (we would be especially interested to hear from cricketers) to attend this event to find out more. Please see our website – northbradleypeacememorialhall.wordpress.com – or phone 01225 765644 with any enquiries.
At each event, a group of dedicated volunteers are named local heroes by Join In’s official partner, BT, in light of their contribution to running the swimming. As part of its ongoing commitment to corporate volunteering, BT is working with Join In this summer to recognise and reward the local heroes who are crucial to the running of local sports clubs and community groups club. Each local hero is awarded a medal in recognition of the time and passion they have given to inspiring more people to take up sport in their area.

Following the successful introduction of improved kerbside waste and recycling collection services in Wiltshire during 2011-12, residents can now recycle a wider range of materials from the kerbside including plastic bottles and cardboard. The mini recycling sites are therefore being used less by residents and the recycling tonnage collected has reduced year on year.
The waste services budget for 2012-13 requires savings of around £300,000. Following consultation, the service has reduced the number of mini recycling sites from 1 October. There will also be no plastic bottle and card collections from mini recycling sites from 1 October 2012. ‘
Please note that Wiltshire Council have sadly decided that they no longer need to provide additional cardboard & plastic mini recycling facilities, so the onsite bins for public use have now been removed. Thank you to everyone who has made use of this facility over the past couple of years. Do not leave any items for recycling in the future as Wiltshire Council will not collect them, the only collection will be the bin for hall users rubbish which is, as always, paid for by the Peace Memorial Trust. As there will now be no recycling facilities we will be very pleased if ‘green minded’ hall users take their recyclable items home for collection.
There will be a special session of ‘Fun Skittles’ on Thursday 4th October at 2.30pm.
£2 per person, no unaccompanied children, refreshments included.

Despite the very windy weather causing most of the entertainment to seek shelter in the hall and forcing Phoenix dog agility, Larkrise animals, Bramble Farm carriage rides, and some traders to cancel and Active Trowbridge not being able to inflate the assault course; a good number of people did attend and still managed to enjoy themselves! The day was opened by Westbury Town Crier Sean Price. Most of the area displays were moved to the stage in the hall where people enjoyed watching and joining in with Trowbridge Youth Band, the Sunshine Clowns, Dee Dee Wilde (of Pan’s People) and her dance troupe, Maria Gonzalez’s Zumba and Azuca fitness dance display, Wafaa Powell and her ladies belly dance demonstration and Trowbridge Majorettes and Canine Partners’ Sheila Sadler with her dog Kerly who braved the weather and performed outside. There was also a wonderful display of art work by Jos Pinto’s Wednesday art class.
We would like to thank everyone who attended and helped us celebrate the 1st birthday of our £48,000.00 Big Lottery Community Spaces project which includes the adult exercise equipment, new footpath, planting and carved bench. Just over £400.00 was made which will go towards maintenance and future improvements on site.

Lots of people came along to enjoy the celebration of the Queen’s Jubilee and the recreation ground becoming a QE11 Playing Field at our Jubilee Field Day!
We used some of our ‘sustainability’ grant from the Community Spaces ‘Fitness & Well-being project to fund the sports roadshow and a small grant from Wiltshire Council covered the cost of the mural.
A profit of £282 was unexpectedly made, thanks to donations made on the day, this will go towards vital hall and recreation ground maintenance.
Fields in Trust supplied a ‘goodie box’, so we were able to distribute lots of flags, stickers, snappers and kites!
We received a Jubilee sapling from the Woodland Trust which we will plant at a later date when we will also install the anticipated QE11 playing fields plaque and the crown mural made for us by Wiltshire Wood Recycling and painted by lots of local people!
Sheelanagig proved to be a really enjoyable event very well presented and many of the audience joined in with some enthusiastic dancing! We made almost £80 profit for hall funds which will go towards vital maintenance.

North Bradley villagers are celebrating after they were told their recreational ground is officially one of the best in the country.
North Bradley Peace Memorial Trust recreation ground has been awarded the prestigious Green Flag Community Award handed out by the Keep Britain Tidy group for being one of the best community-run green spaces.
The people responsible for the ground had to show it was a well managed, quality green space, which met criteria such as being central to the community and welcoming.
Brian Bond, chairman of the memorial trust, said: “I am delighted the recreation ground was judged to be of award worthy standard again this year, especially as the site has just completed a £45,000 project for various improvements, including adult exercise equipment.”
The recreation ground has been joined by a swathe of other parks up and down the country which are being handed the award for the first time. In 2011, 1,288 parks and green spaces will fly either the Green Flag or Community Award.
Phil Barton, Green Flag Plus Partnership chairman said: “I would like to congratulate the people at North Bradley who have worked hard to keep their recreation ground at a high standard and ensure that it is a pleasant and enjoyable space for the community.”
The recreation ground is in the running for the People’s Choice Award but will face stiff competition from others green spaces in the UK.
This award is based on a public vote. Visit www.keepbritaintidy.org/GreenFlag
We would like to make it clear that this bench was designed and created, based on local people’s ideas, by Anthony Rogers. To see more of Anthony’s work please visit his website – http://www.anthonyrogers.co.uk/index.html
Anthony Brown has now finished our community bench which has been dedicated to the memory of Elaine Bond. It’s in place, awaiting a nice shady tree to be planted later in the year!
